The results of the Gujarat assembly elections are out. This time the Bharatiya Janata Party has created a new record. In Gujarat, which has 182 assembly seats, 156 BJP candidates won the elections. The Congress suffered the most. The Congress came straight down to 17 from 77 seats. Means Congress had to bear the loss of 60 seats. At the same time, this time only five candidates of the Aam Aadmi Party, which claimed to form the government, could win the elections. The SP candidate won one seat, while the remaining three seats were won by independent candidates.

Tharad seat of Banaskantha district is politically very special. The BJP has won the two elections held here before this election but had to face defeat in the by-elections. The BJP had fielded former minister Shankar Chowdhary from here this time. In this election, Chowdhary defeated Gulab Singh Peerabhai Rajput of INC by 26,506 votes. Shankar Chowdhary got 1,17,891 votes. Whereas, Gulab Singh Rajput had to satisfy with 91,385 votes only. Virchandbhai Chavda of Aam Aadmi Party had to be content with just 278 votes. More votes were cast on NOTA than Chavda. Tharad’s 3,466 voters pressed the NOTA button.

BJP won the 2017 election as well
BJP’s Parbat Bhai Patel won this seat in 2017 assembly elections by defeating Congress candidate Damraji Rajput by 11,000 votes. A total of seven candidates were in the fray in this election, out of which the deposits of four candidates were forfeited. In the 2012 elections too, this seat went to the BJP’s account. BJP’s Parbat Bhai Patel defeated Congress’s Mavji Bhai Patel by a margin of 3000 votes. A total of six candidates were in the fray in that election, out of which the deposits of four candidates were forfeited.

Shankar Bhai Chowdhary has contested in front of Shankar Singh Vaghela

This time the BJP had declared former minister Shankarbhai Chowdhary as its candidate for this seat. Chowdhary contested the elections in 1997 at the age of 27 in front of the then Chief Minister Shankar Singh Vaghela. However, Shankarbhai Chowdhary became MLA for the first time in 1998. Polling was held here in the second phase on December 5. The results came on 8 December.
Congress won five seats in Banaskantha district in 2017
Tharad seat is one of the 9 seats under Banaskantha district. In 2017, Congress had won 5 out of 9 seats in the district. At the same time, BJP was successful in winning four seats.
